Local Events

There is plenty to see and do around Buffalo and below are some the regular events held in the area.

Annual Cattle Drive
It isn’t the largest cattle drive in the West but it gets a crowd lining the streets the second or third week in September when the local cowboys finish their round up and branding, and head those doggies down Highway 16, past the Buffalo KOA, to the stock yard for their long and last trip to the Chicago cattlepens.

Lion’s Club Annual Fishing Derby
This well known event is held annually at lake DeSmet over the Memorial Day weekend. Contestants for the prizes, which often include a fully equipped fishing boat, tackle, and more, come from hundreds of miles surrounding Buffalo. To the casual observer it appears that a village of tents, trailers and boats has risen overnight along the vast shore line of the lake. Approximately 10,000 trout are added to the royal blue waters of the lake each spring in advance of this derby.

American Triker Convention
Don’t be surprised to see many strange and unusual brightly painted three wheel vehicles all around the city of Buffalo the first week in August. For that is the time the city plays host to the American Triker Convention. Trikers are three-wheel motorcycles whose owners seem to spare no expense when it comes to making their "Trike" (short for tricycle) comfortable and unique. Then they drive it for thousands of miles to show it off to other "Trikers".

Horseshoe Tournament
Around the end of June, the City Park comes alive with the cheers of hundreds of spectators as the City of Buffalo sponsors the annual Horseshoe Tournament. Fun and food for all.

Living History Days
This annual event lasts three days near the end of June. Its activities center around the living history of the Buffalo area. You’ll see and visit with the Basque families that abound in the nearby sheep ranches, and be offered a taste of their spicy French-Spanish style of cuisine. You’ll most likely see cowboys and cavalry soldiers wearing the costumes of the 19th century. The Jim Gatchell museum will tell you stories of the settling of area and how it got to be this way.
